Never start a project on version 2.0

It is almost always better to get the basics down, and then step back and observe. Most projects, large and small, require about half of the required resources to accomplish 90% of the stated goals. The other half is needed to complete the remaining 10%. Before expending resources on that last 10% of functionality (or design, or content, etc.), stop. Implement the 90% solution, and call it version 1.0. Observe how it performs. Once launched, problems and suggestions from actual users will surface. These will be invaluable in determining what goes into version 2.0. But you won't know that when you start, so don't waste your time (and money) on such large unknowns.
